Disney's Paperman

Disney's next iteration of its production pipeline and the future of 2D animation for the company. The assets are 3D but rendered to appear as traditional 2D cell animation.

Looks good so far but to my knowledge this type of cell and line shading techniques have been used in the anime industry for years now and has already been successfully done. An example is Appleseed, a 2004 Japanese animated science fiction action film directed by Shinji Aramaki and based on the Appleseed manga created by Masamune Shirow.

Time will tell on this one if Disney can produce the goods with this new implementation into its production house and reinvigorate their flagging 2D industry since former Disney CEO, Michael Eisner, famously closed their amazing 2D animation studio in Burbank in 2002.
